Clean Technology Market Trends

Clean technology stocks have outperformed the broader equity market over the past decade. Since January 2001, clean technology indices, WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index ("NEX") and Cleantech Index ("CTIUS"), have returned 51.8% and 65.0%, respectively, compared to a 13.2% decline for the S&P 500 index (as of December 22, 2009).

The clean technology industry has attracted significant amounts of capital in recent years. Total investments from the Venture Capital and Private Equity communities in the sector grew from $500 million invested in 46 transactions during 2000 to a record 455 transactions representing $16.4 billion in 2008 before slowing to $6.9 billion year-to-date in 2009 as a result of the global economic slowdown. Total public market and M&A transaction value grew from $1.9 billion during 2000 to a record $52.9 billion in 2007.

The Clean Technology sector has been among the top performing sector in 2009. The New WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index ("NEX") returned an impressive 33% in 2009, placing it among the top industry returners.
